Recycling WorldAn increasing number of nanomaterial-based innovations finds application in established value- and product chains, leading to an increased interest from industry, academia, governments and stakeholders looking at lifecycle assessment of nanomaterials and how nanowaste is generated and handled. NIA takes part in these discussions and bring forward the views of the nanotechnoly industries.

There are three broad origins of waste from nanomaterials, with categorisation similar to conventional waste:

  1. Waste generated during the production of nanomaterials or nanotechnology derived products
  2. Waste generated during the usage of nanomaterials or nanotechnology derived products (e.g. abrasion, degradation etc)
  3. Waste generated during the end-of-life activities (e.g. recycling, incineration, landfill etc)

The European Commission has launched thematic studies that explores nanomaterials and the EU environmental legislation; in 2011, a report was published that looks at the Coherence of Waste Legislation in the EU.

In May 2012, the OECD held a workshop on 'Safe Management of Nanowaste' were NIA attended. More information about this workshop is available for NIA Members at the Members area.
