EFSA publishes updated Guidance on nanotechnology in food and feed
On July 4, EFSA published its 'Guidance on risk assessment of the application of nanoscience and nanotechnologies in the food and feed chain: Part 1, human and animal health'. The guidance was earlier this year out for public consultation, and it now enters a 'pilot phase' until the end of 2019.  This guidance focus on human and animal healt...
The future of nanomaterials within REACH - Catch up with the NIA webinar
NIA hosted a well-attended webinar 'the future of nanomaterials in REACH' on Monday July 3.  The 60 minute webinar introduced the nano-specific changes to REACH Annexes approved in April 2018 and potential impact on company amendment and preparation of dossiers.  Watch the webinar again here.
Large scale manufacturing of h-BN realised
There are many 2D materials being created nowadays and many of them have properties superior to graphene. Where hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) differs vastly from graphene, is that is in an electrical insulator (although the band gap can be easily tuned), thus lending itself towards coating, dielectric and field effect transistor (FET)...
CARACAL documents related to nano
Last week there was a CARACAL meeting between European Commission and Member States. Among many things up for discussion, one was updates on nanomaterials. NIA Members find more information at the Members Area (require sign in).
Nanotechnology used in greenhouse plastics to increase yield
Nanotechnology has been used in greenhouses to increase yields of crops. A new US start up (SolGro) is using nanotechnology to convert the light spectrum of sunlight into red and blue light that are more efficient for plant growth. Crop yields have increased from 20 % up to 300 %.
EUON to publish reports on nanomaterial pigments and reliability of data sources in the summer
The European Union Observatory for Nanomaterials is scheduled to publish in the summer the result of two studies it has commisioned and that has now been finalised.
