NIA is seeking comments on two documents of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission (SCCS) which has recently opened two consultations on cosmetics - set to be closed on 8 January 2016.
NIA Members are invited to provide comments and scientific data on : the SCCS draft Opinion on Hydroxyapatite (nano) in cosmetics:
- The committee currently states that the evidence provided ‘is insufficient to allow drawing a conclusion on the safety of nano-hydroxyapatite when used in oral cosmetic products’; NIA Members having data fitting the SCCS Guidance on the Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials in Cosmetics SCCS/1484/12, on safety aspects of nano-hydroxyapatite are invited to respond to the consultation and to provide information to NIA.
- The study also underlines that ‘nano-hydroxyapatite in needle form is of concern in relation to potential toxicity’ and recommends that it should not be used in cosmetic products. NIA Members having information on needle form nano-hydroxyapatite are invited to contact NIA staff.
NIA Members are also invited to read through the 9th revision of the SCCS notes of guidance for the testing of cosmetic ingredients and their safety evaluation; nanomaterials are adressed in Section 3-8 of this document. SCCS summarises the requirements laid out in the Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, and in the SCCS Guidance on the Safety Assessment of Nanomaterials in Cosmetics SCCS/1484/12.
Should you have any comment on these notes of guidance and on the points of the SCCS opinion on nano-hydroxyapatite raised above, please contact Guillaume.Flament@nanotechia.org by email. This NIA consultation will close on 6 January 2016.
