Nanotechnology has been used in greenhouses to increase yields of crops. A new US start up (SolGro) is using nanotechnology to convert the light spectrum of sunlight into red and blue light that are more efficient for plant growth. Crop yields have increased from 20 % up to 300 %.
Another advantage of shifting the light spectrum to blue and red is that detrimental bacteria and fungi are not thriving in this light spectra. The technology is more expensive than traditional greenhouse plastics but does not require any energy input as it is an additive to the plastic itself.
