The H2020 projects NanoReg2 and Gracious are working together with OECD to address physico-chemical parameters within nanomaterials.
The workshop will review the outcomes from two joint projects within the OECD Working Party for Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN): “Physico-chemical Decision Framework to Inform Risk Assessment” and “Guiding Principles for Measurement and Reporting”. Collectively, these projects provide a framework to define which physico-chemical parameters are needed to achieve the most relevant information for a certain purpose (e.g., nanomaterial identification, prediction of fate or toxicity properties) and how to measure those parameters, to ensure alignment with purpose and to facilitate comparable data of sufficient quality.
Case studies will be applied to demonstrate and test the methods and approaches described, and identify areas of improvement. The main focus will be on physicochemical properties for substance identification/characterisation (e.g., particle size, composition, shape, surface chemistry). In addition, regulatory relevant physicochemical properties related to initial exposure (e.g., dustiness), environmental fate (e.g., dispersion stability), hazard characterisation, including considerations for toxicokinetics (e.g., fibre status and biopersistence) will be addressed.
