NIA participated in the Special Interest Group on Nanotechnologies (SIG nano) of the New and Emerging Technologies WG for Medical Devices, hosted by DG GROW. The group currently has the priority to produce guidelines to support the classification of medical devices according to rule 19 of the new EU Medical Devices Regulation (2017/745). NIA will contribute with examples from Members and support Members to identify and prepare for revised classifications.
Within the pending review of the EC recommendation on the definition of a nanomaterial, the SIG will identify the
potential impact of the current terminology on medical devices, particularly where ambiguity in the text may create challenges that are difficult to resolve.
The SIG nano also highlighted a FIDE (European Dental Industry) position paper on the use of nanomaterials in dental materials which may have wider implications for materials developers and users.
