Presented to the European Parliament in 2014, the Proposal for a Regulation on Organic production and labelling of organic products (2014/0100(COD)), will now be presented in Plenary again. Discussions on the legal basis of the text have been closed by the House's Committee on Legal Affairs.
In 2015, the European Parliament had agreed to amendments to the Proposal which introduced provisions on the use of engineered nanomaterials in organic products, these included:
- a reference to the definition of 'engineered nanomaterial' from the Regulation on the provision of food information to consumers (1169/2011);
- an provision on the 'exclusion of food containing or consisting of artificially engineered nanomaterials' related to the specific principles of organic agriculture and aquaculture;
- a provision on the 'exclusion of food containing or consisting of engineered nanomaterials' related to the specific principles of organic food and feed;
- a prohibition of 'the use of techniques, products and substances produced by using nanotechnology' in the production of organic processed food and feed under the specific production rules in Annex II to the Regulation.
The European Parliament is now set to debate and vote on this 2014 European Commission Proposal for a Regulation on organic production, during the Plenary Session of April 2018.
