The NIA was pleased to make a detailed response to the recently published National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Research Strategy: 2024. This strategy represents the U.S Government’s commitment to direct future research in nanotechnology innovations to ensure that they meet the needs of the economy and society.
The NIA’s comments were made in collaboration with its members to help ensure that the NNI’s strategy remains relevant and in-line with current knowledge. There is a need to ensure that the environmental, health and safety of nanomaterials continues to benefit from scientific advances to improve knowledge in this area and to ensure sensible, proportionate and realistic legislation. Ensuring that the nanotechnology industry has a voice in US government policymaking is important for NIA’s members, who could be negatively impacted by legislation that cannot be applied, or not based on scientific evidence for need.
The NIA welcomes the update to the NNI’s EHS strategy and believes that it is a timely document, since the last strategy was published in 2011 and there have been many advances made in the last 13 years.
