The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) have just published their 2nd report related to the EC nanomaterials definition recommendation. The report ‘Identification of nanomaterials through measurements’ and raises several points to consider in the assessment of particulate materials according to the nanomaterial definition and weather a particulate is to be considered a nanomaterial or not.

The report provides a flowchart and describes screening methods as well as confirmatory methods that can be used for identification. The report states that ‘For a correct classification whether a material is a nanomaterial or not, a thorough knowledge of the applied measurement method is needed to correctly interpret the outcome of a measurement and to understand whether a specific technique is fit for the purpose.’
