The European Parliament adopted on 19 April 2018, in its first reading, Regulation on organic production and labelling of organic products. The Regulation will state that organic food production shall exclude food containing, or consisting of, engineered nanomaterials. The text uses the definition of 'engineered nanomaterials' already in place in the Novel Foods Regulation of 2015.
This regulation originated in 2014 when the European Commission shared its proposal with the European Parliament and Council. The legislative process had come to a halt in 2015 for legal reasons and resumed in 2018 with a statement of the Committee on Legal Affairs.
After adoption in by the European Parliament, the regulatory file will be passed on the the Council of the European Union before it is adopted.
