ECHA has commissioned a new study under the European Union Observatory for Nanomaterials (EUON) to examine the use of nanomaterials in flame-retardant systems. The study will map nano-enabled flame-retardant technologies across sectors including construction materials, electronics, and textiles, and assess their prevalence in the EU market.
The research will identify knowledge gaps concerning release potential, transformation during use, and end-of-life behavior. It will also evaluate existing hazard and exposure data and review whether current regulatory information requirements adequately cover nano-specific properties such as particle size, dispersion state, and nano-specific degradation pathways.
