The EC published a version 2 of the 'Catalogue of nanomaterials in cosmetics products placed on the market, as notified to the European Commission by Responsible Persons' on 15 November 2019. The publication of the Catalogue was accompanied by an Explanatory Note explaining the updated catalogue.
The publication follows a request to Responsible Persons to updated the information in the Catalogue to increase consistency and accuracy. In EU all cosmetic products, including nanomaterials, have to be notified via the Cosmetic Products Notification Portal.
By the end of 2018, less than 1.5% of cosmetic products were notified to contain nanomaterials. The Catalogue lists 29 Nanomaterials with various types of functions in cosmetics (e.g. as colourants, UV-filters, or other functions).
The previous Catalogue was from 2016 and published in 2017 as reported by NIA.
As an additional note, nanomaterials used in Cosmetics are requried to be labelled as 'nano' in the list of cosmetic ingredients according to the Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
