AICIS has updated guidance on categorising industrial chemicals at the nanoscale. Companies must now assess whether substances fall into "specified class of introduction" if at least 50% of particles (by number) measure 1-100 nm as primary particles, aggregates, or agglomerates.
This distinction triggers enhanced reporting and record-keeping requirements, reflecting potential risks from nano-forms versus bulk materials. AICIS cites uncertainty around nanoscale behaviour, including increased reactivity, to justify additional obligations.
Research-only introductions face lower volume thresholds: ≤10 kg/year for exempted status and ≤100 kg/year for reported status. Beyond these volumes or for non-R&D uses, chemicals meeting nanoscale criteria may require assessed introduction with detailed evaluation.
The guidance aligns with AICIS's goal of modernising Australian chemical regulation while supporting safe innovation and compliance
