The EU Regulation for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals – REACH (Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006) is the European integrated approach for managing chemicals. Under REACH, industry is responsible for both assessing and managing the risks posed by chemicals, and for providing appropriate safety information to users.

Nanomaterials are classified as chemical substances under REACH. Therefore manufacturers, importers and downstream users of nanomaterials have to comply with the REACH requirements.

The next deadline for registering substances produced or imported within the 100-1000 tonnes per year range is 31 May 2013. Industries producing nanomaterials in this quantity should take action to prepare for the registration.

The European Commission CASG-nano Group advises on how to manage nanomaterials safely in accordance with REACH and the CLP Regulation. The CASG-nano Group has prodiced two important documents:

  1. Nanomaterials in REACH proivdes and overview of how the provisions of REACH apply to nanomaterials
  2. Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Nanomaterials in REACH and CLP focuses on the classification of nanomaterials in accordance with REACH and particularly the CLP Regulation.
