EFSA published in July its assessment of four recent scientific studies on titanium dioxide. This is based on a  request from the European Commission on 22 March 2018 to assess four studies (Heringa et al., 2016; Bettini et al., 2017; Guo et al., 2017; Proquin et al., 2017), published after the EFSA scientific opinion in 2016, on the potential toxicity of TiO2 used as a food additive (E 171).

The EFSA Panel concluded that the outcome of the four studies did not merit re‐opening the existing 2016 opinion related to the safety of TiO2 (E 171) as a food additive.
