OECD WPMN 10-12 May

NIA is holds the vice chair position in BIAC (The Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD).

The OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) meeting on 1012 May discussed a number of issues.

The WPMN was provided with updates from the WPMN Steering Groups.

The 2012 Important Issues document will be revised and updated, and NIA as part of the BIAC delegation will provide input to this document. Several OECD Technical Guidelines (TGs) are being revised and an update was provided on nanomaterial size distribution.

There are currently about 6 Technical Guidance that are being proposed and revised for updates. The finalisation of the TGs will in most cases still be a few years down the line.  Assessments of the in vitro as well as the in vivo data from the OECD Sponsorship Programme were presented for discussion and feedback. Another topic that was discussed was to start a Adverse Outcome Pathway project under the OECD umbrella focusing on nanomaterials. Guiding principles for measurement and reporting for nanomaterials were also discussed.

ECHA NMEG 16-17 May

NIA is an accredited stakeholder organisation to ECHA, and attends the ECHA Nanomaterial Expert Group Meetings (NMEG). The agendas and minutes of the NMEG, as well as its composition is now publicly available on the ECHA website https://echa.europa.eu/regulations/nanomaterials/nanomaterials-expert-group

The meeting on 16-17 May discussed a number of topics and provided an overview of developments since the last meeting. ECHA has earlier had 4 guidance documents out for public consultation and they have been through the CARACAL approval process. They are to be published shortly. ECHA also informed the participants on the progress of the EU Observatory on Nanomaterials (EUON) that is scheduled for public launch during the summer.  Participant were provided with a presentation on the ProSafe review on the OECD Technical Guidance documents, and the OECD workprogramme. A dedicated presentation was provided by ECHA on how to register nanomaterials in IUCLID6, and an example on Calcium Carbonate registration was given from industry. The JRC read-across project Nanocompute was presented. On the second day, participants were given an updated on nanomaterials in the Biocidal Product Regulation by ECHA. The Global Harmonised System activities on nanomaterials was presented and the work plan for 2017-2018 of NMEG were discussed.
