The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) invites scientists, photographers and nano-enthusiasts to enter its 2013 NanoImage Competition. With our mission to improve the image of nanotechnology, we are eager to see striking examples that illustrate nanotechnology’s diversity of nature, its range of applications and its unseen beauty.  Our panel of experts will judge images on their originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit and one entrant will be selected for the grand prize.

Submissions can be made here.

WHO CAN ENTER

The NanoImage Competition (the “Competition”) is open to all persons aged 18 and above, regardless of residence or citizenship and subject to the laws of their jurisdiction but excluding NIA employees, board members and their immediate families.

HOW TO ENTER

Participants can send a maximum of 10 images in total.

All images must be submitted via this link. Please complete all required fields, including name, email and other information about your photo submission.

For images including people, please make sure to obtain permission from the individuals depicted. Participants are responsible for obtaining the necessary rights, and must be able to provide copies of those releases to NIA upon request.

Please do not submit images that involve: nudity, criminal activity, the willful harassment of wildlife, damage to the environment by the image-maker, put any individual or animal in danger, or infringe on the rights of any other artist or person.

Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel’s sole discretion.

ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING

To ensure eligibility for the contest all entries should have a resolution of at least 5 Megapixels or higher. Images that do not meet this standard can still be judged but may not be honoured as a finalist in the competition (at the judges' sole discretion) if the photographer is unable or unavailable to provide the proper resolution when requested.

Resolution can be calculated by multiplying the pixel width of the image with the pixel height. For example, a photograph taken with a 5-megapixel camera set at the highest resolution and best quality produces images of approximately 2592 pixels by 1936 pixels, which are acceptable under the rules (2592 * 1936 = 5 million).

Entries may originate in any format – including, but not limited to, digital files, digital prints, colour transparencies, colour prints, or black and white prints – so long as they are submitted electronically. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see “Your Rights” below). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to NIA upon request.

Submissions may be watermarked if desired, but the watermark should be inconspicuous enough to not interfere with the judging of the photo. A watermarked photo might not be honoured by the competition (at the judges sole discretion) if the photographer is unable or unavailable to provide a pristine, watermark-free version of the image when asked.

No responsibility will be accepted by NIA for lost entries and proof of transmission will not be accepted as proof of receipt.

Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judges are a panel of NIA staff member responsible for selecting images for various NIA printed and online marketing and membership materials, and the NIA Board of Directors.

NIA shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.

WINNING PHOTOS

The judging panel shall select one image to be the grand prize winner. This entrant will win an Apple iPad 3. The prizes as described are available on the date of publication. All prizes are non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives.

DEADLINE

Entrants may be asked to supplement their submission (such as a paragraph about their photo, the highest resolution version of their photo, or a watermark-free version of their photo) anytime on or after 11 Oct 2013.

The winner will be announced on 1 Nov 2013*.

(*NIA reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control)
